Herp of the Month: Marbled Salamander
Ambystoma opacum

Herp of the month

QUICK REFERENCE
Description - Stocky in appearance, black background with silvery white pattern of crossbands (sometimes incomplete) along neck to tail. Head is also patterned with black and white. Females are larger than males. Males have a brighter pattern than females.
Range - Much of lower Midwest and Southeast United States.
Activity - April to October.
Diet - Earthworms and other invertebrates.
Habitat - Deciduous woodlands and temporary (fishless) ponds.
Size - 3 ½ to 4 ¼ inches as adults.
Breeding - Breeding begins in autumn. Female lays up to 200 BB-size eggs near a water source. Female guards eggs until autumn rains wash them into the temporary pools. Young quickly develop and begin to grow through winter and metamorphose in spring.
Lifespan - 4-6 years.
