Knives
Roger Carter's collection
Several years ago I started collecting knives and swords.
My criteria for buying any was Hollywood replicas (I have copies of
the knives from the Rambo movies and other movies and television shows)
and knives with herp art.

This folding knife is eight and three-eighths inches long and the blade is three and
one-half inches long. On only one side of the plastic handle is an image of a
crocodilian with its mouth open. I think the image was etched into the plastic
handle and the colors somehow applied later. The image of the crocodilian is a gold
color while the handle is black plastic. Engraved on the blade is "CHINA" and
"STAINLESS". The edge of the blade is sharp but not razor sharp.

This is a very small knife that shows a crocodilian holding a key ring in its mouth
and a small blade coming out of its backside. With the blade extended this knife is
two and thirteen/sixteenths inches long. With the blade closed this knife is one and
five/eighths inches long. The blade is not very sharp but could be sharpened. I
bought this from a friend of mine in Chicago, who buys and sells old toys and trinkets.
There wasn’t any packaging to identify any details like who the manufacturer was,
where it was manufactured, or what material it was made from. There is no engraving
anywhere on the knife. On the close-up pictures that I took I can see what looks like
small patches of rust.

This knife has the iconic “DON’T TREAD ON ME” snake image in the yellow handle with a
coiled rattlesnake. This image was first used on a flag known as the Gadsden flag on
an American warship in 1775 during the Revolutionary War against England. Today this
image is used to express personal freedom and liberty. Between this image and the base
of the blade on the silver-colored band are the words “Master Barlow”. I found out
that Barlow is a style of pocket knife and a company that made and imported pocket
knives and other collectables. With the blade extended this knife is eight and
three/fourths inches long and four and fifteen/sixteenths inches long with the blade
folded. At the base of the blade is engraved “NOVELTY KNIFE COMPANY”, “CHINA”. On one
side of the box that this came in is printed “Novelty Knife Co.”, another side has
the printing “HEROES of the SILVER SCREEN”, and another side has this printing “Under
license 2011: Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum; Red Ryder Enterprises, Inc.; U. S.
Television Office Inc.; Roy Rogers Merchandising; Sharpeco Dist.; Zorro Production,
Inc.; Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.” At each end of the box is printed “NV257” which
is the model number for this knife. There isn’t anything showing what material this
knife is made from. I hope that it’s stainless steel.

This stiletto knife, manufactured by the Kissing Crane Cutlery Company, has the color
pattern of a coral snake on the handle with a red band touching yellow bands which
are touching black bands. Where the handle is near the base of the blade there is a
narrow yellow band, a narrow black band, a narrow silver colored band, and another
narrow black band. On the wide black band is a silver colored medallion that shows
two cranes facing each other with the text “KISSING CRANE SINCE 1834”.
Engraved on the blade is an image of a banded snake, representing a coral snake, with
the text “RED TOUCHES BLACK, FRIEND OF JACK”. On the base of the blade is the same
Kissing Crane logo that is seen on the medallion on the handle. On the bolster at
the base of the blade is engraved “267” which I think is the model number for this
knife. At the base of the blade on the other side is the text “KC5462 2017 Stainless
Steel”. On the wide black band is a sticker that says, “MADE IN TAIWAN”. The knife
is eight and thirteen/sixteenths inches long with the blade three and
fifteen/sixteenths inches long. This knife came with a “Certificate of Authenticity”
that reads “Your new knife was carefully hand-crafted using the most intricate and
careful craftsmanship to produce one of the world’s most exquisite knives.
Each knife offers mirror polished 440 stainless steel blades honed to a razor’s edge,
so they’re not only cutlery masterpieces, but also functional knives. Polished nickel
silver bolsters and pins accent the world renown nickel silver Kissing Crane shield
that appears on the handle of each and every Kissing Crane knife. Founded on quality
German traditions and values, your new Kissing Crane knife will benefit you with
years of dedicated service and continue to serve as you pass it down as the family
heirloom it will become.” This is the second knife that I have seen that is decorated
like a coral snake.

This folding pocket knife has two blades. The handle is a yellow material with silver
colored bolsters, a silver pin, a silver medallion with the letters “MCC”, and the

knife but it reminds me of an Eastern copperhead, Agkistrodon contortrix. At the base
of one of the blades is printed “CLARK CUT SALEM, IND.” There aren’t any decorations
or anything else on the back side of this knife. As shown in these pictures, the knife

The other blade is two and thirteen/sixteenths long. I don’t have any packaging for

The blades also have the “JOIN, or DIE” with the image of a snake that has been cut
up into eight pieces. The folding knife has these images on both sides of the knife
while the large knife only has these images on one side of the knife but has the
American flag shown on the handle of the other side.
The following is a description from Wikipedia about the “JOIN, or DIE” image before
the American Revolutionary War and up to the war: “Join, or Die. is a political
cartoon attributed to Benjamin Franklin. The original publication by the Pennsylvania
Gazette on May 9, 1754, is the earliest known pictorial representation of colonial
union produced by an American colonist in Colonial America. It is a woodcut showing a
snake cut into eighths, with each segment labeled with the initials of one of the
American colonies or regions. New England was represented as one segment, rather
than the four colonies it was at that time. Delaware was not listed separately as
it was part of Pennsylvania. Georgia, however, was omitted completely. Thus, it has
eight segments of a snake rather than the traditional 13 colonies. The poster focused
solely on the colonies that claimed shared identities as Americans. The cartoon
appeared along with Franklin's editorial about the "disunited state" of the colonies
and helped make his point about the importance of colonial unity. It later became a
symbol of colonial freedom during the American Revolutionary War.”
At the base of the blades is engraved “BK5192 Stainless Steel Handcrafted in China”.
The handle of the large knife has four seven/sixteenths holes in the handle for some
reason plus a hand guard. The bottom of the box has the following specifications:
“14 ¾” overall fixed blade knife has a 9 ¾” blade. Both the blades have the phrase,
“Join or Die”. Fixed blade includes a nylon belt sheath. Assisted opening pocket
knife: 3 ½” blade, 4 ½” closed.” There isn’t anything to identify the company that
manufactured this set. Both blades are sharp.

of the body of the knife. With all of these accessories folded away the knife is
two and one/quarter inches long.
The handle of the Swiss Army Knife that is still in its packaging has a black
background with images of four poison arrow frogs, one is colored mostly blue,
one is colored green with black spots, one is colored maybe a light yellow with
black bands and black spots, and the last one is colored mostly red. The back
side of the handle doesn’t show any frogs, just green fern-like plants.
This is the first knife that I have seen that has images of any amphibians.
At a flea market I did see a small knife that came with a box that called the
knife “SALAMANDER”. There wasn’t any art work on this knife or the packaging.
The handle of the Swiss Army Knife that is not in any packaging has one side with a

turtles that might represent some kind of sea turtles. This is the second knife

I don’t know why they call this a sidewinder Bowie because
from the pattern and the picture on the box this is a Western Diamondback
Rattlesnake. It’s still a nice heavy Bowie knife.
My new herp knife is a large Bowie knife that was shown in the latest catalog from
the Smokey Mountain Knife Works in Tennessee. We received this catalog just before
Christmas.
The description from the catalog says "Features: 440A stainless steel blade with
full color custom snakeskin onlay. Brass spine accent, guard and double rivets.
Wood handles with lasered rattlesnake on front. 14-1/2" overall. Nylon belt sheath
with embossed patch." There is a scale pattern on the blade with the word
"Sidewinder" in black script on the blade and the S is shaped to look like a
silhouette of a snake. I think the "snakeskin onlay" is some sort of pattern that
is laminated onto the blade. The image of the rattlesnake on the handle is a
rattlesnake in the process of striking at something. The "embossed patch" on the
sheath shows a scale pattern, a close-up of a rattlesnake head with its mouth open
that looks like the snake is in mid-strike and the word "Sidewinder" in front of
the open mouth, this is the same script that is on the blade. The blade is 9-3/8
inches long, 2-1/16 inches at its widest point and 3/16 inch thick and is very
sharp. This was manufactured in China by a company called Rough Rider Knives.
I don’t know why they call this a sidewinder Bowie because from the pattern and
the picture on the box this is a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. It’s still a

each end of the snake. The other text says "KISSING CRANE COLLECTOR SERIES ONE OF 600."
At the end of the handle is the Kissing Crane logo with the text "KISSING CRANE SINCE 1834."
The blade shown at ninety degrees is also three and five/sixteenths inches long with
the image of a snake that has its mouth open showing the fangs and forked tongue.
The Kissing Crane logo can be seen it front of the snake with the text "SPECIAL

The handle itself is an even four inches long. There is a black band with a silver
colored shield that has the Kissing Crane logo shown in red. Each end of the handle
is silver colored with the rest of the handle being a green pattern of what could
be pebbles. On the back side of the handle is a tag that says "MADE IN TAIWAN."

This knife is named “Sidewinder” by the manufacturer and features
a coiled up snake on the box and an image of the underside of a snake
running the length of the box. Unfortunately the snake they are showing
is a western diamondback rattlesnake. This was confirmed by my friend in
Texas, Tim Cole. Thank you, Tim.
At one end of the box is printed "CT643 PRODUCED UNDER LICENSE OF NEW COLT
HOLDING CORP." and, on one side, "Visit allthingscolt.com for more of your
favorite brand."
This is a slender knife nine inches long with the image of snake scales
on the steel. One of the engineers that I work with examined this under
an optical microscope that is run through his computer and the scale images
seem to be laminated onto the steel. The back end of the knife has a
lanyard wrapped around it seemingly to represent the rattle of a rattlesnake.
The Colt logo is in the scale pattern on one side and, on the bare steel,
is etched “CT643 CHINA”. There is no identification on the packaging or the
knife of what kind of steel this is but in a recent catalog that has this
knife it says the steel is 440A stainless steel. The edge is sharp.
There is a nice sheath made of a hard plastic.

This is a very interesting knife manufactured by the Colt Firearms
Company patterned after the coral snake. There were several sizes in
the series and I have the largest one.
On the top of the box is a picture of a coral snake and the Colt
logo. On the front of the box is the identifier "COLT CORAL SNAKE
SERIES" and on the inside cover is a picture of Samuel Colt with
the phrase "Red on black is a friend of Jack. Red on yellow can
kill a fellow."
As you can see there are two blades. Each blade has a thumb
notch to open. On the left hand blade is etched 'RED ON BLACK IS
A FRIEND OF JACK RED ON YELLOW COULD KILL A FELLOW' and on the right
hand blade is etched the figure of a banded snake. The body of the
knife is banded in red, yellow and black bands to represent a coral
snake. The Colt logo is etched at the base of each blade and on the
back side of the left hand blade is etched 'CT560', 'Quality Since
1836' and 'China'.

This folding knife has the image of a coiled up rattlesnake that
was popular around the time of the American Revolution with the words
'DON'T TREAD ON ME' and, in Latin, 'NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSET'. I checked
the Latin phrase in Google translate and got the following: 'nemo me impune
lacesset means nobody worried me with impunity.'
Will Brown e-mailed me the following information:
'Not sure how helpful it is, but here's a portion of what Wikipedia has
to say (if you plug in the phrase, there's a long write-up on its origin
and application:
Nemo me impune lacessit is the Latin motto of the Order of the
Thistle and of three Scottish regiments of the British Army. The motto
also appears, in conjunction with the collar of the Order of the Thistle,
in later versions of the Royal coat of arms of the Kingdom of Scotland
and subsequently in the version of the Royal coat of arms of the United
Kingdom used in Scotland. It is often translated as 'No one attacks me
with impunity', or rendered in Scots as 'Wha daur meddle wi me?'
('Cha togar m' fhearg gun dìoladh' in Scottish Gaelic). It is also
alternatively translated into English as "No one can harm me unpunished'.
The motto also appears (spelled 'Nemo Me Impune Lacesset') above an
American Timber Rattlesnake on a 1778 $20 bill from Georgia as an early
example of the colonial use of the coiled rattlesnake symbol, which later
became famous on the Gadsden flag. The phrase also appears on mourning
bands worn over the badges of law enforcement officers in the USA.'
This knife is seven and seven/eighths inches long open and four and
eleven/sixteenths inches closed. On the other side of the blade is
etched 'RR530 STAINLESS STEEL HANDCRAFTED IN CHINA'. I think it's
unfortunate that this was made in China because of the emblem in the
middle of the handle that shows a patriotic design of stars and stripes
with the words 'AMERICAN PATRIOT'. This should have been made in
America. The blade is razor sharp.

Part of the snake's image is wrapped around the handle and comes

rubber feels weird! Most knives have a metal handle or wood and some
of those might have leather wrapped around that. This is the first knife

We can also see other gods - Nut, Thoth and Horus, and servants.
The entire unit is sixteen and one/half inches long. When separated
the knife is fifteen and one/half inches long with the blade seven
and one/half inches long and the edge is not sharp. On one side of
the blade is engraved "FURY 65543". I don't know what that means.
The images are probably some kind of resin and the blade is probably
stainless steel. This was made in China.

This is an intermission in my regular series to report on Pat Hammond's
machete, that has the image of an alligator etched into the blade.
This is a large, heavy machete that seems to be pretty old. Pat knows
that one of his uncles owned it but he doesn't any more than that. It's a
bit dirty (maybe it spent years in someone's garage) and the edge isn't sharp.
The machete is twenty-seven and three/quarter inches long, the blade is
twenty-one and five/eighths inches long, two inches wide at the wooden handle
and, where the point curves upward, is four and thirteen/sixteenth inches from
the cutting edge. There are three shallow grooves on each side of the blade that
run about three/quarters the length of the blade. I have no idea why these
grooves are there. Near the handle there is an image of an alligator that
is one inch long. To the left of the alligator is the text
"MARTINDALE-BIRMINGHAM-MADE IN ENGLAND", under the 'gator is the text
"REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.", and to the right is "NO. 300B". I did a Google
search for "martindale knife company birmingham england" which led me
to the web site www.ralphmartindale.co.uk. They have a wide variety of
machetes and other cutting tools. The alligator seems to be part of their logo.
Cleaned up and sharpened, I think this would be awesome.

The snake is a light green and the lizard is a pale orange or

care for the unpainted ones, they are pure white. This is the
only painted one I have seen. The entire image is fifteen inches

"CHINA STAINLESS STEEL". The blade is not sharp.

This is a break in my regular articles to report on a knife
that I do not have, mostly because it is $200.00 (actually $199.95).
I found this knife on the web site of the National Rifle Association
(www.nra.org). From their home page click on NRA store and then
click on knives to see this knife. The following is the description
of the knife from their web site:
A carved Diamondback Rattler's body gracefully adorns the front
of its cocobolo handle, and the back panel features realistic, textured
scales - the result of state-of-the-art laser technology.
When opened, the blade reveals a complete snake, alongside the classic
patriot's warning: "Don't Tread On Me." The NRA store teamed with
American manufacturer Bear Ops® to produce this exclusive collectible knife.
It features a satin finished, Sandvik 14C28N steel blade with incredible
edge stability that's also corrosion resistant and easy to sharpen.
"NRA" is prominently featured on the front of the handle.
Each knife is individually numbered for collectability. Includes
black microfiber pouch and manufacturer's lifetime warranty. Made in USA.
Specifications:
* Sandvik 14C28N knife steel

The blade and the end of the tail, which is three and five/eighths

plastic with the head and part of the tail a silver color with
the fangs black.
On one side of the blade just inside the mouth is etched "XL

of the manufacturer.

This small knife has a picture of a cobra on the blade and the

I thought that cobra had been painted on because I could feel
something. I found out from one of the engineers that I work with,
Bob Taylor, that this kind of thing is etched into the un-finished
blade by a laser and then the blade is smoothed and polished. Bob
has an electronic magnifier at his desk and he took some enlargements
of the images on this blade. There is an image of the head of the
snake, the rattle of the snake and part of the word Rattlesnake
taken at 50X magnification showing the little pock marks from the laser.
As you see it in the picture the knife is seven and one-quarter
inches long and the blade is three and one-half inches to the

different colors of wood were laminated together. I don't know
